PDP crisis: How Babangida, Abdulsalami brokered peace –Ex-Plateau gov
Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District
and former governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang has declared that the
intervention of former military presidents, General Ibrahim Babagida and
General Abdulsalami Abubakar, by reconciling Amodu Sheriff and Ahmed
Makarfi factions of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) “has sealed the
party’s victory in 2019.”
He noted, with dismay, the manner in which top party chieftains dumped
the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and said the
intervention of the senior citizens in resolving the crisis attested to
the fact that Nigerians have lost hope in the APC government.
Jang, while addressing PDP supporters in Jos, on the efforts to
reconcile aggrieved factional leaders of the party, said a committee
would be set up to solidify the reconciliatory move by former the
military presidents.
“Important stakeholders of the party intervened by reconciling the two
factional leaders of the party. They include General Ibrahim Babagida
and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, among others. They have been involved
in the reconciliation of our two factional leaders, Senator Amodu
Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
“The two leaders have now agreed for a committee to be formed to conduct
a convention; with that understanding, all cases in court would be
withdrawn and there will be no room for members to drag the party to
court on issues that can be resolve internally.”
Jang, who is a member of Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP also
challenged the party to come up with strategies to counter the
undemocratic behaviours of the APC in 2019.
“We take things for granted; we think PDP is so popular that organs
saddled with the conduct of elections will go by our gentility. When you
have an opponent who is not democratic, you should also find a way to
counter his undemocratic behaviours.”
